Dialysis – What Are The Procedure And Purpose Of Doing It?
Dialysis is the process that is performed for the function of the kidney if they get failed.
The end-stage of kidney failure begins when the kidneys are performing only 10 to 15 percent of the normal function which they used to do.

Dialysis is the treatment that helps in filtering and purifying the blood by using the machine.
This thing helps keep the balance in your fluid and electrolytes f the body when the kidneys are not able to perform their jobs. This is the process that has been used from the year 1940 in order to treat people who are suffering from kidney problems.
What is the purpose of dialysis?
When the kidneys function properly, then it helps in preventing the extra water, waste, and other toxins from affecting the body. The kidneys also help in controlling the blood pressure as well as regulating the level of chemical elements which are present in the blood.
These elements might include sodium and potassium too. You might not be aware of the thing that your kidney is also responsible for activating the form of vitamin D n the body, which improves the ability to absorb calcium.
When your kidneys are not able to perform their jobs due to any kind of disease or injury, then dialysis is the process that can help in keeping them running in the usual way as much as possible.
Without the process of dialysis, the fluid, the other toxin, and waste products can get accumulated in the blood, and they can poison the body, which can lead to the damage of the internal organs.
Well, the thing is that dialysis is no help in curing kidney diseases or any other issues which are affecting the kidney. There are some different treatments that are required for addressing those kinds of concerns.
What are the different types of dialysis?
- Hemodialysis
Hemodialysis is the most common type of dialysis that is practiced. This is the process in which the artificial kidney is used for removing the waste and the extra water out of your blood.
This blood is removed from the body through the body, and it is then filtered through an artificial kidney.
After the filtration of the blood, it is returned to the body again with the help of a machine of dialysis. This treatment usually takes three to five hours and is performed three times a week.
However, it is also possible to do this treatment in shorter and more frequent sessions too.
- Peritoneal dialysis
Peritoneal dialysis is one that involved the surgery for implanting the peritoneal dialysis into the abdomen of the patient. The catheter, which is embedded in the body, helps in filtering the blood.
It is done through the peritoneum, which is a membrane that is peritoneum in the abdomen. During this treatment, the special fluid that is called dialysate flows into this membrane.
After that, this dialysate absorbs all the waste, and once it draws all the waste from the blood, then It is drained out from the abdomen.
This procedure requires some hours, and this is needed to be repeated four to six times per day. Well, you need to know that the exchange of fluid can also be done when you are sleeping, or you are awake.
The final verdict!
By now, you might have gained enough knowledge about the procedure and the primary purpose of dialysis. You need to know that dialysis is a time-consuming task, and it is expensive too.
Not every person in this world who suffers from kidney disease use dialysis, but if they are participatory experiencing severe and acute kidney failure. The dialysis can also be performed at home.
The thing is that peritoneal dialysis can be performed alone, but in hemodialysis, it requires a partner for it. This can be from your family, friend or nay nurse also.
